For the past 6 years I've been a cross country glider pilot and have been learning the art of soaring, going to competitions, trying to set soaring records, and enjoying long flights in my ASW-20B high performance glider. During this period I've had over 20 off-field landings. In a sailplane there is no go-around option so our landings must be spot landings every time. Unfortunately, we don't get as much practice at this as we'd like without having the benefit of being able to do touch and goes.

My 20 year old son Blake and I flew down to Huntsville from Minnesota for Stearman training. I was in the market to buy a Stearman and wanted to get some flight time as insurance would require it as prerequisite. We drove out to the Moontown airport the evening before training was to start and were impressed with the charming setting for the airport. The sun was low in the sky and it back lit the Stearman parked next to the grass runway as it reminded us of a movie site location.

I was fortunate to be able to train for two days with the fun and friendly people at Acro Air. I spent a couple of hours with Aaron in the Decathlon doing stall/spin awareness and recovery, and then spent an hour with Brant doing a familiarization flight in the Stearman. Both instructors provided great training. I was thoroughly impressed by their calm demeanor, friendly disposition and constructive, professional approach. They both patiently allowed me to go out, try it, mess it up, and learn, while simultaneously keeping me from tearing anything up.

Tailwheel Training

May 24, 2008 Well it's about time to start test flying N57EN. The airplane is ready, but unfortunately I am not. I have not kept up with my flying during the last 5 years and have had very little tailwheel time. If this were a nose wheel airplane, I would probably just get some Cessna 172 time and my flight review from a local instructor. However, since this is a tailwheel airplane, we have a whole different set of skills and flying techniques (more accurately takeoff and landing techniques) to be learned.
